It’s that time of year again – Back to School and/or Back to College. To help us with the process I’m sharing our Dorm Room Reveal featuring Pottery Barn Dorm. Plus this mom’s tips on college drop off survival tips for both parents and students. I personally couldn’t have loved my college experience anymore. Both of my big girls are actually attending the same college that their dad and I both met and graduated from. I knew Pottery Barn Dorm would be just perfect to help us with the whole crazy dorm room decorating process.
For some moms heading back to school or college means they’re counting the days and it honestly can’t come soon enough. Then there are the other moms like me so sad to see them go. I sit here honestly wondering where the last 18 years have gone. Because like they say (and no quote could ever be so true than this one right now) ‘the days may be long, but the years are short’…
(click continue reading also for ‘What I’d Like Every College Student to Know’)
Way too short in my opinion as I sit here typing through these tears streaming down my face. Yes I know they are ready. Yes I know they are excited. Yes I know they are only a 3 to 4 hour drive away from me. Yes I know we’ve done our best to raise compassionate, caring, loving, hard working and confident children. Yes I’m thrilled they’ll be together and have each other. But no matter what it’s still hard. It just sucks. I know I hate that word too but there isn’t another word that can best describe how I’m feeling right now.
There are just a few things that no one tells you when you have children. One being just how hard it truly is to say bye to your children when they head off to college. No matter if you think they are ready or not. Most of the time THEY are so ready but WE as parents are not. Not sure about you but this was also true for me when they went off to kindergarten as well.
I’ll be losing not only my oldest this year (for her sophomore year) but also my middle as well. So yes this isn’t my first rodeo. But I do feel like it might be that much harder this year knowing that I’m losing not just one but two of my girls. And don’t get me wrong last year was hard. I cried the whole way home. It will also no doubt be very hard and lonely for my youngest daughter who has always had her big sisters around. The house will just be different and obviously much more quiet. I remember when my big sister left I cried and cried but I was going into my Senior year of high school so that at least kept me very busy.
So for all you moms (and dads) out there I suggest do something maybe you’ve never done before. Keep yourself busy. Go volunteer at that shelter you’ve been thinking about. Get out of your comfort zone. Maybe get a part time job or volunteer more at the school. This was one reason I started my blog to keep myself busy once my girls got older. Or for those of you that still have other children at home take them out to do something special. Our youngest is missing her big sisters just as much and it’s truly heartbreaking.
And did I mention bring your tissues? Lots of tissues.
Here is the BEFORE picture of the girls dorm:
Since my daughter has a roommate we had to make sure that both girls agreed on all the items that we chose to decorate their dorm room with Pottery Barn Dorm. We quickly found out for their dorm room reveal that Pottery Barn has a plethora of beautiful options of bedding for girls dorms as well as cool options for boys dorms too. We were able to narrow our choices down pretty quick because Ava & her roommate already knew that they wanted a white duvet cover. And there were so many pretty white duvets to choose from. Ultimately they decided they liked the Pretty Pleats Quilt & Shams best.
Once they had chosen their pleated white duvets next they chose a simple White Organic Cotton Set of Sheets, a pretty white Plush Bed Blanket and a Cozy Super Soft Pink Euro Pillow Sham.
Their room is outfitted with a not so nice very dark carpet so they both wanted to pick out a light colored rug that would brighten up their room some. They both agreed upon the Diamond Ivory Rug in the 8×10 size. It has a beautiful diamond pattern throughout the rug. That we thought would look absolutely amazing and definitely lighten up the girls dorm room as well.
You can find the girls exact faux fur throw here, the throw is found here as well & can also be found here (similar for less throw found here & here also). Here is the exact matching fur pillow as well.
Monogrammed Lumbar pillow found here: & Grey Antelope Pillow found here.
Arm/Bed Rest found here, this one is pretty too & similar faux fur one found.
Their closets are not very big at all. So they both needed to save as much space in there as possible. They decided a great way to do this would be to order these items: Hanging Closet Organizer with Closet Storage Bins (for sweaters and t-shirts etc.) and the Over The Door Shoe Rack that will help save so much floor space as well.
Lastly, we were excited to pick out some fun decorative items for the girls dorm room and desk areas. They chose the: Ceramic Stud Lamp, Vanity Marquee Mirror, No Nails Photo Rail, and the adorable Quilted Pinboard for all their pictures of their friends and family (but mostly of their sweet mom’s).
I had an awesome college experience but my dorm room never looked this cool! The overall experience on the Pottery Barn Dorm website was super easy. I love how they break everything down by categories for you and it makes you feel at ease and not overwhelmed at all.
The actual first time college experience can bring on so many mixed emotions. Feelings of anxiety, sadness, excitement, homesickness, you name it we’ve all felt them after leaving home for the first time.
But if there is one thing that I would like every college student to know is that college will be some of the best years of your life! So enjoy every minute of every day because it definitely doesn’t last forever (even though it might have taken this momma 5 years or so). This is truly the last time in your life that you will not have much, if any responsibilities at all (besides making your grades). College is after all your last stop before actual adulting begins.
Your schedule consists of going to class for just a few hours a day. Then going home for an afternoon nap. So that you’re well rested before going out (or studying). This is probably how many of us would love to be spending most of our days too. Oh and don’t forget no worries at all. Except maybe whose going to ask you to the next formal or football game this weekend.
Not too mention I think that the friends you choose in the first few days of school will be more important in life than the actual classes you take. I know you will choose wisely.
Call your mom.
Now sit back, enjoy the ride and never forget your way back home.
Goodbye’s are never easy. And this year was much harder for all of us (including our youngest Audrey who has never been an only child). Being back at home this week to an especially quiet house has been difficult. Somedays you just feel like staying home in your pj’s doing absolutely nothing feeling sorry for yourself. But I find that keeping busy with my blog, exercise, gno’s and of course spending quality family time, especially with my little, always helps.
No one ever says that workout was a total waste of time. But instead you might think those endorphins actually made me feel a little better today. I think I’ll try that again tomorrow.
Best of luck to each mom, dad & all the siblings out there missing our college bound loved ones. Because sometimes just letting go is the hardest part of all.
