Christmas in Kauai

Waikoko Beach:

This beach is quite small and relativity hidden along the highway at the very end of Hanalei Bay. We access this beach very easily because our Hawaiian friends know the owner and thus rent from him directly. But for others, getting to the beach from the highway is a little tricky because you have to climb down a steep embankment. Believe me, no matter how you get there, it’s worth every step. Just don’t try to bring too much stuff down the cliff.

To me, the most gorgeous part of Waikoko is the shallow, rocky lagoon. It’s absolutely perfect for kids (or adults) to frolic and play. In the winter months, there is a surf that breaks just off the reefs. While we were there over Christmas, we watched many local surfers come to ride the big waves just outside the house we rented. The best day of watching the surfers was when we had the opportunity to meet and take photos with Bethany Hamilton, of the movie, Soul Surfer, fame. While we watched, she showed those boys how it was done and could not have been nicer when we met. As my girls said, it made their trip. She is such a fabulous role model for all girls and boys alike. Look out for her if you ever visit Waikoko Beach. She lives close by with her husband and little boy.

Hanalei Bay:

Hanalei Bay is nearly three miles of deep white sand beaches that have a backdrop of the most beautiful and majestic mountains that you’ve ever seen. It is the largest bay on Kauai and is located between Hanalei River to the east and Waipa River to the west. Towards the right side of the bay, there are more experienced surfers. Closer in, at the pier, the waves are much smaller, and are perfect for those learning to surf. We also like to walk down and jump off the pier. You will almost always see others joining in the fun as well.

The middle of the bay is great for boogie boarding or for intermediate level surfers. We rented a house for the first time right in the middle of Hanalei Bay on this trip. In the past, we have stayed at the Westin and St. Regis Hotel. The St. Regis has a fabulous view of the Hanalei Bay and also one of the best brunches that you’ve ever had. We always make a point to go there and enjoy brunch at least once or twice while we are visiting Kauai. The Hanalei Bay beach has always been one of our favorites because it is never crowded and has plenty of room to play, work out, or even just relax and sunbathe with a good book. Next time while visiting Hawaii you should definitely include Kauai as one of your stops. I promise you won’t be disappointed. We all need our 15-20 minutes of vitamin D, right? You know where I’ll be in paradise…now go find yours.
